Subaru celebrates having the sole sales surge in 2008

DETROIT -- Amid the glum forecasts and painful recounting of disastrous 2008 sales, Subaru of America was celebrating.

Subaru was the only mainstream company to increase sales in 2008, up 0.3 percent. The automaker also reported "our highest market share in 26 years," Tom Doll, executive vice president of Subaru, said in an interview on Sunday.

Subaru's market share rose from 1.16 percent in 2007 to 1.43 percent last year, company executives said.

In 2009, Subaru hopes to keep U.S. sales stable, with demand for the Forester crossover still strong, said Tim Colbeck, the automaker's vice president of sales. Subaru sold 60,748 Foresters in the United States last year, compared with 44,530 in 2007.

To mark the 20-year anniversary of the Legacy sedan, a concept version of the next generation was unveiled here at the auto show. Production of the car began at Subaru's Lafayette, Ind., factory in 1989.

The Legacy concept shows the car's future -- a more aggressive face with sharper and sportier lines that will carry over into the range, said company executives. The new look will debut later this year.

The Legacy also will grow in size -- adding legroom -- to better compete with cars in its segment, such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
